1963 – The Year that Gave Us Doctor Who

Oct12_021b

1963 was a seminal year in American life.  It was the year of the Kennedy Assassination – a moment like 9/11 where everyone alive then can tell you what they were doing at the moment they learned of it. It was also the year that brought us Doctor Who and the release of the first Beatles album.  1963 will be celebrated in all its glory tonight at theRock per Annum event at the Velvet. Exploring the development of rock from 1960 to 2012, each week focuses on the music of just one year. It’s been a fascinating process so far because the music for each year is so much fuller and more varied than one expects.

In fashion, 1963 was a turn toward softness in makeup with paler lips and softer eye shadows. Traditional seasonal color associations were cast aside and springtime pastels were seen in winter. Long, generous sleeves staged a comeback, and blouses played an important part in the layered look. Wools were the fabric of choice and fur was particularly popular.  I am doing homage to 1963 with the fabulous Helena layered skirt, top and jacket from Donna Flora. I did not go full vintage, though, sticking with ultra modren platforms from Peqe.  For more details of 1963 in fashion, see PaperPast’s marvelous archive.

In culture, this was the year of The Birds and The Fugitive. The year of Petticoat Junction and Doctor Who. Doctor Strangelove and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. This was the year of Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream I speech and the murder of Medgar Evers. In music, Stevie Wonder was known as “Little” Stevie Wonder and though the Beatles recorded Please, Please Me, they weren’t on the charts.

I hope you can join in the fun and explore the last 50 years of music at the Velvet. It’s a long, strange trip. If you would  like to see the photos from this shoot without the damage from light leaks and age, they are on my flickr here.

Please keep this series up! It’s a wonderful look back, reeling in the years for me. Your look: I’ve never been one for leopard fur — until now; that coat and hat are lovely!
