New York Origami

I love the Designers United events. By focusing designers on a single inspiration, not only do they let us see an idea reimagined in many ways, they also often force designers out of their comfort zones into a new way of thinking about design. DU 19 was an extension of the DU 4 event focused on Narcissus and designers shared creations inspired by some of the alternate choices for inspiration for DU4: metamorphisis, 60s space age or origami. This dress is Anya Ohmai’s creation based on origami and gives us a new iteration of the paper dress.

I shot it at Rez on the land down below the landing point which is on an island anchored by the chain you see in the photo. If you walk to the edge of the island and let yourself fall, you will find yourself down at this very modern Stonehenge.

You can see a more complete picture of Rez here. The landing point is on the island above.

You can see the many origami folds in this dress along the collar, the skirt demi-peplum and the lovely pinwheel hat. The obi-inspired sash gives a nod to the Japanese source for the art of origami. The paper print of the fabric is a lovely wink to the historical paper dress, but also another association with the art of folding paper.

I wore the outrageously fun Xander leggings from Pink Outfitters. They don’t go down to the feet, though, and I wanted that effect so I added the socks piece from House of Fox’ RichGurl leggings to bring them down and into the shoes. The shoes! I fell for these crazy wedges from Royal Blue at Shoe Fair where I bought two pair and then have waited for an outfit that really would suit them. This dress was just right and I was excited to finally be able to show off these bold, industrial wedges.

For accessories, I limited myself to the leggings and these earrings from Uzuri. The hair is from Saboteurs and the skin is another DU19 find – from Tres Blah and I am going to make you figure out which of the three options inspired it. You get one guess. The poses are from Gesticulate – my blog partner Gidge’s new store she opened with Elusyve Jewell. They rock!
