Julie Marsden Didn't Have This Red Dress

In the classic Bette Davis film Jezebel, Davis’ character Julie Marsden shocks society by wearing a red dress to her debutante ball. Her hapless, weakling of a fiance dumps her at the end of the evening – lacking the guts to marry a woman who doesn’t conform. Incidentally, I don’t think that is how we are supposed to perceive their relationship, I think we are supposed to think she had it coming, the shameless hussy! However, when I saw the film my first thought was “you’re better off without that prig.” I often don’t think the way I am “supposed to” about films. Anyway, my idea is that if Julie Marsden has this red dress, Preston might have found some backbone and stayed engaged, they would have married, lived happily ever after and he never would have caught yellow fever – a fitting end for someone who dumps his girl because she wears a shocking dress.

Yes! This is a saucy dress, insolently scarlet red. Unabashedly red! But soft and romantic and luscious and floaty and just an absolute maraschino cherry confection. Preston would have seen that big lush rose at the waist and just fallen to his knees. Or perhaps Julie would have kicked him in the shins to help him along.

This is just skirt porn. It’s so luscious I wanted you to see it from another angle! You also get a glimps of the lovely diamond trim on the gloves.  The lovely Valentine Dress is from Baiastice and comes with matching gloves. You can also wear it with a slimmer skirt which Gidge showed off in a post at Second Style. By the way, I shot way too many pictures because I just loved the sheen, shimmer and shine of this satin ensemble.

I chose the sassy Dita von Teese hair from Aleixandre Biedermann because I wanted something that celebrated the bright shining spirit of this dress. The jewelry is from Dahlinks, I decided Bette would wear crystal.

You absolutely nailed it with this dress, Cajsa; some of the finest photos I’ve seen on this blog. That hairstyle is perfect for your face, and the dress…!
