A PSA On Getting Problems Fixed

Everyone knows that from time to time you will buy something that doesn’t work quite right, for one reason or another. I used to just throw these things away, quit buying from that store etc. Until I realized that the vagaries of the Grid being what they are – something I bought on Monday might’ve worked just fine if bought on Tuesday.

Thus – you have to know how to reach out for help, with some humility, from the creator.

Example – I bought this Liam hair from Dernier Cri.  I spent forever looking for new hair a few weeks ago, and not to be too much of a jerk – a lot of guy hair is crap. That’s another blog post. One I won’t write. But I liked this one, so I bought it. And then I couldn’t get the color tint hud to come up.

The very short version is that you buy the hair – wear the hud and you get the option to tint the hair (ONE TIME) in ANY of the color spectrum available. It should look like THIS when it comes up.

Except that isn’t what happened. I got a pink line where you see that hud.  I left the hud on for days, taking it on and off. Putting it on all the various hud attachment points. Choosing WEAR vs. attach. I literally went through every iteration I could think of – until finally I wrote out a notecard to Asuka, the creator.

I included a screen shot with HUD interface showing, and let her know that I wasn’t sure if I had done something wrong or there was a script error but that I was unable to tint my hair. I also told her what I bought exactly. I realize she can look it up – but when customers have their shit together without being rude – creators like that. They’re busy – not to busy to help us BUT – I think it’s an appropriate gesture to have all of your information together.

Guess what? She took one look at the screen shot and said “WOW that’s not right” and redelivered me the hair and hud. I deleted the old copies and bam  – tintable hair with functional HUD.

Lesson? Dernier Cri has stellar customer service. Also – sometimes it’s all in how you ask for help.

Well said. I make every effort I can to get things to work and only once have I not received excellant customer service and responses back. And as you said, I don’t shop at that store any more. I would love to see more well made male hair creators. Good ones for the guys are so hard to find. Isa.

  4. A very good point. I had a vendor error happen before Christmas and it took quite some time for it to resolve. However, before getting all hot and bothered, I joined the store group and checked to see when the store owner had last logged in and realized that she would not have received my notice because she was either sick or on vacation or otherwise not in SL. Yes, it took a long time and I did sent reminder notices hoping they would go to her e-mail, but I worked hard to stay positive and polite and sure enough, it was resolved to my satisfaction without drama and anger.

I wonder if the HUD got rotated somehow…I’ve had just a thin line show up when I’ve attached a HUD somewhere other than where the maker intended and editing the rotation usually brings the proper face back up.
